_CO-CONSTRUCTING
KNOWLEDGE ______________COMMUNICATION
Mosaico
de Conservación
Because
bycatch off the Baja California peninsula is among the greatest threats
to the endangered North Pacific loggerhead turtle, the future of this
ocean- and culture-connecting migratory species is in the hands of
Mexican fishermen. Our objective is to convey to local fishermen that
the future of the Pacific loggerhead turtle is in their hands and
to partner with and empower them to reduce their turtle bycatch while
maintaining their livelihoods.
To
do so we have implemented the conservation mosaic model Developer
by Proyecto Caguama co-director Wallace J. Nichols. The mosaic consists
of three approaches for achieving conservation. The novelty of the
mosaic lies in strategic integration of these approaches: 1) building
a conservation network of fishermen, students,
teachers, activists, researchers, managers and other coastal people;
2) drawing on these partnerships to derive new knowledge
to develop locally practical solutions; and 3) communicating
this knowledge to avoid by-catch and foster a sustainable sea ethic.
