One of the main challenges in the field of marine conservation is the progression from field research, to knowledge, to the modification of detrimental behaviors. The Grupo Tortuguero uses outreach and education to engage and involve people from around the world, educating them on the threats to our oceans and empowering them to make sustainable choices. We have two distinct projects that furthers out outreach goal:
Monthly Turtle Bulletin and Turtle Stories We produce a monthly bulletin and Turtle Story, each of which include brief updates and announcements on the work of the Grupo Tortuguero, as well as an interesting and engaging sea turtle story. The stories explore the unique lives of sea turtles and those working to save them, including sea turtle lifespan, migrations, diet, myths, interactions with indigenous cultures and conservation tales by fishermen and community members. Each monthly bulletin is featured in local papers and on local radio shows.
Tortuga Mobile In order to reinforce the conservation work developing in non-monitoring sites and keep community members involved and engaged, we are developing the Tortuga Mobile that will visit each of these sites bi-annually. The van will be equipped with all of the education and outreach materials needed to make each scheduled visit fun and memorable. The Tortuga Mobile is a retrofitted van that will support interactive educational activities (mobile laboratory, classroom), designed to foster discussion and facilitate outreach and stewardship of coastal resources by providing an exciting, interesting, and empowering experience for local communities via non-traditional educational experiences. Trips will be scheduled in March, to coincide with Semana Santa, a traditionally high turtle consumption period, and October, in time to register participants for the Annual Conference of the Grupo Tortuguero and the Master Tortuguero Certification Course. Contact Jesús Lucero at chuy@grupotortuguero.org to find out where the Tortuga Mobile will visit next!
Environmental Education We have a collection of resources for kids and teachers to make learning about sea turtles fun and easy. For Kids and Teachers
